Reflux & Heartburn

Functional Medicine in Boulder, CO

When you've been on acid blockers for years and still don't know why it started.

Reflux and heartburn are among the most common reasons people end up on acid-suppressing medication indefinitely. These drugs relieve symptoms effectively, but they were never designed to address a cause, and staying on them for years carries real costs: impaired absorption of B12, magnesium, calcium, and iron; a shifted gut microbiome; rebound acid production when you try to stop; and, in some cases, an increased tendency toward bacterial overgrowth. There's also a common misunderstanding at the center of it all — the problem often isn't too much acid. Sometimes it's too little, or a valve that isn't closing, a motility issue, an H. pylori infection, a hiatal hernia, or specific dietary and microbiome triggers.

Esophageal Health at Helios

At Helios we work to identify the actual mechanism behind your reflux rather than simply turning down the acid. Depending on your history, that may include testing for H. pylori, assessment for SIBO or low stomach acid, identifying food and lifestyle triggers, and evaluating overall gut health. Treatment targets what we find, combined with dietary and lifestyle change, gut healing, targeted supplementation, and — where it's appropriate and you want it — a careful, supported taper off long-term acid suppression rather than a lifetime of dependence.

Let’s get to the cause

If you've been on acid-reducing medication for years without ever addressing why, or you'd simply rather not stay on it indefinitely, we'd like to help you find the cause.

Suppressing a symptom for years is not the same as treating it. Schedule a consultation and let's investigate what your body may be telling you.

“Their attention to detail and commitment to quality truly stood out. We’ve already recommended them to others.”
