Peripheral Neuropathy
Functional Medicine in Boulder, CO
When the numbness, tingling, and burning have been written off as something you'll just have to live with.
These symptoms which usually show up first in the feet and hands are frequently treated as symptoms to be masked rather than a problem to be understood. Patients are handed gabapentin or a similar medication, told the nerve damage is likely permanent, and sent on their way. And while some neuropathy is irreversible, a great deal of it is driven by contributors that are identifiable and treatable, especially when they're caught before the damage becomes fixed. The question worth asking isn't just how to quiet the symptoms, but why the nerves are being injured in the first place.
Nerve Health at Helios
At Helios, we investigate the underlying drivers of neuropathy rather than defaulting to symptom suppression. Blood sugar dysregulation and insulin resistance are among the most common causes, and they often begin damaging nerves in the pre-diabetic range, long before a diabetes diagnosis. But they're far from the only culprit. We also evaluate for vitamin deficiencies (particularly B12, B6, and folate), thyroid dysfunction, autoimmune activity, heavy metal and environmental toxin exposure, chronic inflammation, alcohol history, medication effects, and viral or post-viral contributors. Because neuropathy so often has more than one driver, a thorough evaluation matters more here than almost anywhere else.
Treatment Plans & Outcomes
Treatment targets what we find. Depending on your picture, that may include correcting metabolic and blood sugar dysfunction, repleting the specific nutrients your nerves need to repair, addressing inflammation and autoimmune activity, IV nutrient therapy, and supporting nerve regeneration where it's still possible — alongside conventional medications when they're genuinely helping. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine also have a well-documented role in managing neuropathic pain and supporting circulation to affected nerves. The goal is to slow or halt the progression, address what's driving it, and recover function wherever the nerves are still able to heal.
If you've been told your neuropathy is just something to manage, and no one has looked closely at what's causing it, we'd like to take that closer look.
Nerve pain is a signal worth investigating, not just silencing. Schedule a consultation and let's find out what's driving yours.
