Nutritional Deficiencies

Nutritional Deficiency Treatment Options

Functional Medicine in Boulder, CO

You can eat well and still be running low on the nutrients you need most.

Nutritional deficiencies are more common than most people (and most physicians) realize. Eating a healthy diet is important, but it doesn't guarantee adequate micronutrient status. Soil depletion, food processing, impaired absorption (particularly in the gut), certain medications, chronic stress, and genetic variations in nutrient metabolism can all result in insufficiencies that don't show up on a standard CBC. And yet these insufficiencies matter enormously. They underlie fatigue, depression, immune dysfunction, cognitive decline, muscle weakness, poor sleep, and slow recovery.

Treating Deficiencies at Helios

At Helios, micronutrient assessment is woven into our functional medicine evaluation. We commonly test for vitamin D, B12, folate, iron and ferritin, magnesium, zinc, selenium, omega-3 fatty acids. And the root cause can be found by identifying specialized markers like CoQ10, carnitine, or specific amino acids. We interpret these results in the context of your whole clinical picture, not just against population-average reference ranges that may not reflect optimal function. We also investigate why deficiencies are present: poor intake, impaired absorption, increased demand, or genetic methylation issues.

Treatment Plans & Outcomes

Treatment may include targeted oral supplementation, dietary guidance, and IV nutrient therapy, which bypasses the gut entirely and delivers nutrients directly to the bloodstream at therapeutic concentrations. IV therapy is particularly valuable for patients with significant gut absorption issues, or for those who need faster repletion. We monitor levels over time to ensure you're responding and adjust as needed.

Your body runs on nutrients. Let's make sure it has what it needs.

I love their Integrative Functional medicine approach. It complements the western medical model and keeps me healthy.
